Production of Free Radicals How does it Happen
Production of free radicals is a continuous, natural process in our bodies. They are by-products of metabolism. The body metabolizes nutrients coming into our body in order to function properly, promote new cell growth, build energy, heal damaged tissues, and in general, sustain life. The body utilizes the oxygen we take in to metabolize these nutrients, and the by-products of this are oxygen free radicals. When we have an imbalance in the amount of radicals in our bodies and the amount of antioxidants available to neutralize them, we have what is called "oxidative stress." Oxidative stress is cumulative and damages not only single cells, but eventually can effect entire organs or other parts of the body. The resulting diseases can reduce your quality of life or even take your life.
Other contributors to this damaging process
Besides normal metabolism, there are many outside sources which result in the production of free radicals. The following is a partial list of these:
- Air Pollution
- Cigarette smoke (first-hand and second-hand)
- Stress
- Pesticides
- Excessive use of alcohol
- bacterial and viral infections
- fungal infections
- radiation
- excessive exposure to sunlight
- food additives
- fried or charcoaled foods
- and last but not least, Exercise.
I put exercise last because it is the only one that is good for you out of this whole list. You take in 20 to 30% more oxygen when you exercise then you do when you are at rest. The body uses the oxygen to produce the energy needed to exercise and thus produces more oxygen free radicals. It is essential that you take a daily supply of antioxidants which are sufficient to neutralize the extra radicals produced from the exercise. "Keep Your Exercise Healthy"
