"The Benefits of Mangosteen"
The Benefits of Mangosteen fruit have been known in southeast Asia for over 400 years.
Mangosteen is a small purple fruit about the size of a tangerine, which has traditionally been used to treat inflammation, dysentery, and skin disorders.
It was also used to fight infection by boiling up the fleshy part of the rind, also know as the pericarp, into a tea.
As early as 1855, a German scientist identified mangostin, a powerful antioxidant, known as a xanthone, which appeared to fight infection, fungus, bacteria, histamines and possibly cancer.
210 xanthones have been identified in nature, and over 40 of those have been found in the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit.
Recent Research on the Benefits of Mangosteen is showing significant reduction of C-Reactive Protein, a measure of inflammation in the body, with the use of Vemma, a product rich in Mangosteen. The same study shows a significant improvement in the immune function of people using Vemma. Both of these results are encouraging for people with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and asthma and their related immune weaknesses, as well as people with HIV and cardiac problems related to inflammation in blood vessels, just to name a few. A second study is showing that Vemma and mangosteen have a sustained peak antioxidant effect for over 6 hours.
The significance of this sustained effect can be better understood by reading about the relationship between
antioxidants and free radicals in preventing damage to healthy cells and restoring health to areas that have all ready been damaged.

Benefits of Mangosteen Related to Healthy Exercise
I was just looking over the list of benefits and realized that I should make you aware of all the benefits of mangosteen in relationship to keeping your exercise healthy. Did you know that you produce 20 to 30 times more free radicals when you exercise than when you are at rest? It is the free radicals that cause all the cellular damage in our bodies that result in all the diseases and degenerative problems we develop during our life time. The reason that the mangosteen helps with so many of the conditions listed above, is that it neutralizes the free radicals. Then they are able to be flushed out of the body without doing damage.
For a more complete explanation of how to Stop Free Radical Damage click here.
I have just finished writing an ebook on how to "Keep Your Exercise Healthy".
I am making it available Free of Charge so all my readers can take advantage of the information it has to offer.
The Ebook Gives You

Personal ExperienceHere are some of the improvements I have seen since starting Vemma with Mangosteen in 2007.
I have been able to:
- Come off of inhaled steroids in just 3 months. I had been using these steroids for 14 years for asthma.
- No longer take anti-inflammatory drugs on a regular basis for my arthritis
- Reduce the dosage of blood pressure medicine I take.
- Use the minimal dose of cholesterol medicine to maitain normal cholesterol levels
- Have healthy retinas and optic nerves which no longer show damage from Glaucoma after 23 years, and
- Many more positive benefits of mangosteen which are too numerous to list.

More Research AbstractsWhen I started writing this site a year ago, I could only find limited recent research in PubMed.com . Now I find 66 abstracts on Garcinia mangostana research, 9 of which are from 2008. I will summarize a few here that look at specific benefits of mangosteen, but feel free to go to
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez
for the complete listing and full abstracts.
So much is being studied about Mangosteen because it has so many powerful antioxidants that are showing some dramatic results. Here are just a few of the Abstracts.

Osaka Prefectural Institute of Public Health, Osaka, Japan. sakagami@iph.pref.osaka.jp
"Alpha-Mangostin, isolated from the stem bark of Garcinia mangostana L., was found to be active against vancomycin resistant Enterococci (VRE) and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), with MIC values of 6.25 and 6.25 to 12.5 microg/ml, respectively. Our studies showed synergism between alpha-mangostin and gentamicin (GM) against VRE, and alpha-mangostin and vancomycin hydrochloride (VCM) against MRSA. Further studies showed partial synergism between alpha-mangostin and commercially available antibiotics such as ampicillin and minocycline. These findings suggested that alpha-mangostin alone or in combination with GM against VRE and in combination with VCM against MRSA might be useful in controlling VRE and MRSA infections."

Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany, University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai, India.
"Altered membrane integrity and inflammation play a key role in cardiovascular damage. We investigated the salubrious effect of exogenously administered alpha-mangostin against beta-adrenergic cathecolamine-induced cardiovascular toxicity"... "Cardiac TNF-alpha and COX-2 expressions were significantly elevated in ISO-intoxicated rats. Pre-co-treatment with alpha-mangostin (200mg/kg body wt.) orally for 8 days significantly attenuated these abnormalities and restored the levels to near normalcy when compared to ISO intoxicated group of rats."
"In conclusion, alpha-mangostin preserves the myocardial membrane integrity and extenuates anomalous TNF-alpha and COX-2 expressions by mitigating ISO-induced oxidative stress and cellular damage effectively. Restoration of cellular normalcy accredits the cytoprotective role of alpha-mangostin."

"The brown planthopper, Nilaparvato lugens Stat. (BPH) is the most devastating insect pest in rice fields. Outbreaks of BPH, which are resistant to many synthetic insecticides, can cause total rice crop loss. This research was done to evaluate the efficiency of extracts of mangosteen pericarp (Garcina mangostana L.) as an alternative control of BPH Thailand strain..."
"The results from this research indicate that mangosteen pericarp extract can be an alternative insecticide for the control of BPH, which may possess high efficiency, cause with fewer environmental problems and result in less resistance in the BPH."

"The fruit hull of Garcinia mangostana Linn (Guttiferae) is used as an anti-inflammatory drug in Southeast Asia. Two xanthones, alpha- and gamma-mangostins, were isolated from the fruit hull of G. mangostana, and both significantly inhibited nitric oxide (NO) and PGE(2) production from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells"...
"In an in vivo study, alpha-mangostin significantly inhibited mice carrageenan-induced paw edema. In conclusion, alpha- and gamma-mangostins from G. mangostana are bioactive substances with anti-inflammatory effects."
